Panama upsets US 5-4 on penalty kicks after 1-1 tie to reach CONCACAF Gold Cup final

SAN DIEGO, July 13 (BNA): After winning the CONCACAF Gold Cup with its junior national team two years ago, the United States has failed to replicate it, the Associated Press reports.

Adalberto Carrasquilla converted the decisive penalty after Cristian Roldan was stopped in his attempt, and Panama beat the Americans 5-4 in a penalty shootout after a 1-1 draw on Wednesday night to reach the CONCACAF Gold Cup final against Mexico.

No. 57 Ivan Anderson put Panama ahead in the ninth minute of extra time with his first international goal, and Jesús Ferreira equalized six minutes later for the 11th-ranked USA.

Panama reached the final for the third time after losing to the United States in 2005 and 2013. Panama will play Mexico, the eight-time champions, on Sunday in Englewood, California.

The United States, seven-time winners of the North, Central American and Caribbean Championships, failed to reach the final for the first time since losing the 2015 semi-final to Jamaica. The Americans have not won back-to-back Gold Cups since 2005 and 2007.
