Middlesbrough knock out Spurs, but City and Palace progress in FA Cup

London, March 2 (BNA): Tottenham Hotspur suffered an FA Cup win at the hands of Middlesbrough, losing 1-0 after extra time in the fifth round at Riverside Stadium against Chris Wilder’s team.

Premier League leaders Manchester City and Crystal Palace beat lower-tier rivals to take their place in the quarter-finals, Reuters reports.

Josh Coburn jumped in the decisive goal in the 107th minute as Middlesbrough continued his modest encounter with Manchester United in the previous round with another memorable night.

It was another setback for Tottenham manager Antonio Conte, who last week questioned his future after the 1-0 defeat to Burnley in the Premier League.

Playing a full-blown side, Conte remained in the starting lineup for Saturday’s 4-0 win over Leeds United in the league, but Middlesbrough had good value in the win.

“This defeat should hurt me, my players and every player who works at Tottenham,” the Italian said.

“I feel like we missed a big opportunity here. When you play against a team that played in the Premier League, you have to kill, in a sporting way, your opponent.

“When you don’t score the chances you create you give them confidence. They deserve to go to the next round and you praise them,” he said.

Wilder, whose team is eighth in the tournament, is credited with creating an enthusiastic atmosphere for the fans.

“The fans gave us the energy to give our best performance,” he said.

“We are happy to be in the next round, I hope to be a home match. A great reward for everyone who has followed this club.

“We want to make memories. We had one at Old Trafford and I think we have one at our stadium, which is great.”

Riyad Mahrez and Jack Grealish scored as Premier League leaders Manchester City beat struggling Peterborough United 2-0.

City struggled to smash the bottom two division club until Mahrez put them ahead an hour before breaking into the right and digging a left-footed shot into the far corner.

Pep Guardiola’s side then doubled their lead with a goal of superb quality – Phil Foden hit a ball from deep and Grealish dropped a superb touch before a clinical finish to score his first FA Cup goal.

“We are in the next round and in the end, the quality of our players made the difference,” Guardiola said, praising the finish of his strikers.

“Riyadh always had this quality in the last third – it’s our best. He scored a great goal. So proud of the match he played.

“The pass from Phil (to Grealish’s goal) was excellent – the control from Jack was excellent. He was aggressive in the last third and came back from injury and played really well.”

Crystal Palace also reached the last eight after Jairo Redwald scored the winning goal in the 82nd minute at home to second-tier Stoke City.
