Spanish coastguard rescues two Nigerian migrants from ship’s rudder

Madrid, July 12 (BNA) The Spanish Coast Guard rescued two Nigerian migrants who hid at the helm of a ship that arrived in the Canary Islands from Togo, a coast guard and police spokesman said on Tuesday.

After being rescued on Monday night in the port of Las Palmas, the migrants were taken to hospital. They were later released and returned to the ship, which must return them to their port of origin, port police said, according to Reuters.

In video and photographs posted to Twitter by the Las Palmas Maritime Police, the stowaways are shown at the helm below the hull, just above the waterline of MSC Marta.

A Civil Guard spokesman said the migrants ranged between 19 and 22 years old.

The coast guard spokesman said the container ship’s last stop before reaching the Spanish archipelago off the African coast was Lomé, the capital of Togo.

The ship left Lagos, in Nigeria, on July 2 and stopped in Togo on July 4, according to local newspaper La Provincia, which means the migrants have been on board for at least seven days.
