Interior Minister: Narcotics cases represent less than 3% of crimes

Manama, June 25 (BNA): The Minister of Interior, Lieutenant General Shaikh Rashid bin Abdullah Al Khalifa, Chairman of the National Committee for Drug Control, attended today the celebration of the International Day for Combating Drugs and Illicit Trafficking.

The meeting was attended by the Minister of Social Development, the Minister of Health, the Minister of Youth Affairs, the Undersecretary of the Ministry of Interior for Nationality, Passports and Residence Affairs, the governors, the Undersecretary of the Ministry of Interior, the CEO of the Information and e-Government Authority, the Inspector General, and senior officials.

The Minister of the Interior delivered the following speech:

“I am pleased to meet all of you on the occasion of the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking. As it is known, in 1987 the United Nations General Assembly decided to celebrate June 26 every year as Anti-Drug Day in order to address the global risks and repercussions of illegal drugs. According to reports United Nations 2022, more than 270 million people use drugs. In Bahrain, thank God, there has been no increase in the past three years as the percentage has been stable to 3% of the total cases related to reported crimes.

I would like to thank the General Directorate of Criminal Investigation and Forensic Sciences, especially the Directorate for Narcotics Control, for their continuous and sincere efforts to carry out their security responsibility. Thanks are extended to the ministries, organizations and individuals who contribute and cooperate with us.

It is no secret to you that today in our security arena we deal and focus, in addition to combating drugs, on many security phenomena and challenges, such as combating corruption, in addition to following up on electronic and ethical transgressions, as well as following up on any traffic chaos.

For his part, the Director General of Criminal Investigation and Forensic Medicine emphasized in his speech the importance of the Minister of Interior’s directives, which contributed to achieving the tasks and tasks of the General Directorate. He appreciated the work of the Drug Control Directorate and its role in the national efforts to protect society and youth. He thanked the Chief of Public Security for following up on security operations and performance. He expressed his gratitude for the role of the members of the National Committee for Drug Control and the team assigned to follow up on the implementation of the committee’s goals.

The ceremony showed a film about the committee’s efforts and the role of society in combating illegal drugs by confronting supply, demand and awareness through modern technology. The film highlighted the awareness programs that meet the efforts of the police in combating drugs.

The event also included an overview of the national project to increase rates of recovery from addiction through artificial intelligence, which is a unique project of its kind in the Middle East. The project aims to detect individuals most likely to relapse through various artificial intelligence techniques to provide them with family and psychological support during rehabilitation. The project consists of two phases: treatment and recovery, and improving the fight against illegal drugs and border security.

The Minister of Interior honored the cooperators with the Drug Control Directorate. He wished all the success to attend in the service of the country.
