Philippines shocks New Zealand 1-0 at Women’s World Cup

Wellington, July 25 (BNA): The Philippines claimed their first win at the Women’s World Cup on Tuesday, making shocking hosts New Zealand 1-0 in their Group A match controversial when a potential equalizer was disallowed.

New Zealand claimed their first World Cup victory when they beat Norway in the tournament’s opening match five days earlier. And so for the first time in six editions of the World Cup finals, Football Ferns entered a match as favourites, almost certain with another win to become the first team to reach the round of 16, Reuters reported.

But Sarina Bolden scored the historic match-winner for the Philippines with her first shot on goal in the 24th minute.
