His Highness Sheikh Nasser bin Hamad Al Khalifa delivered the following speech at the conference:

Their Royal Highnesses…

Excellencies…

Special guests…

The scourge of human trafficking and illegal – or irregular – migration remains one of the most complex challenges facing humanity.

In any given year, the International Labor Organization conservatively estimates that around 25 million people are victims of human trafficking, more than 70 percent of whom are women and girls.

Addressing the root causes of irregular migration is extremely difficult, because by definition it is international in scope and rooted in factors including conflict, climate change, and socioeconomic inequalities between countries.

To be sure, resolving these issues and creating sufficient legal immigration pathways to meet demand is a task beyond the reach of any single government or administration.

The Kingdom of Bahrain, under the leadership of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, is a firm and consistent advocate for multilateral initiatives to address all forms of irregular migration. In fact, as a kingdom, we have maintained the #1 ranking in the US State Department’s Trafficking in Persons Report for six consecutive years.

As the third most densely populated country in the world, the Kingdom of Bahrain commends the Rome Process and acknowledges the way in which it seeks through consensus, cooperation and respect to prioritize the human being in a far-reaching response to a humanitarian crisis.

Over the coming weeks, months and years, the Kingdom of Bahrain will invest and work tirelessly with our international friends and partners to achieve the strategic objectives of the Rome Process.

In doing so, make a tangible difference in the countries of origin of irregular migration across the Mediterranean, Middle East and Africa region to promote better social stability, economic development and opportunity, and to tackle and reverse climate change.

Human trafficking is a vicious business, estimated to be worth more than $150 billion annually to the people smugglers who facilitate it.

By working together under the Rome Process protocols, the nations present in this room today have a golden opportunity to strike decisively and, at the same time, sustainably improve the quality of life for billions of people.

Bahrain is proud to be a signatory to the Rome Process and to be part of the solution to one of the biggest challenges facing humanity.

Thank you
