Fernandes replaces Maguire as new Man Utd captain

London, July 20 (BNA): The English Premier League club announced today, Thursday, the appointment of Portuguese midfielder Bruno Fernandez as the new captain of Manchester United.

Reuters reported that the 28-year-old would replace defender Harry Maguire, who was stripped of the captaincy by coach Eric Ten Hag after the England international failed to secure a place in the first team.

Fernandes, who has scored 64 goals and provided 54 assists in 185 games for the club in all competitions, has been captain in the absence of Maguire, who spent most of last season on the bench or was injured.

British media reports linked the defender with a move away from the club.

“The Portuguese midfielder has worn the United armband on numerous occasions and Erik ten Hag has confirmed that he will now captain the club on a permanent basis,” United said in a statement.

“As captain, two-time Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year will continue to set the highest standards across the squad as United strive for success in the 2023-24 season and beyond.”

Fernandes drew criticism for his sloppy performance in the 7-0 defeat by rivals Liverpool in March.

United’s preliminary campaign is well under way, as Old Trafford beat Olympique Lyonnais 1-0 on Wednesday.

United next travel to the United States, where they will face Arsenal, Wrexham, Real Madrid and Borussia Dortmund in pre-season friendlies.

United will return to participate in the Champions League next season after failing to qualify for the tournament in the 2021-22 season.
