The main incident occurred on a slippery slope with 146km to go on the podium, with Movistar rider Antonio Pedrero forced to abandon the race after being carried off on a stretcher, Reuters reported.

South African Luis Meintjes, who was 13th in the general classification, also dropped out before Colombia’s Esteban Chaves threw in the towel 134 kilometers from the finish in Morzine and Dutchman Ramon Sinkeldam left midway through the stage.
