Hilary Knight’s hat trick leads to gold, USA tops Canada 6-3

Brampton, April 17 (US): For all the focus on the young and reorganized USA team roster, the team’s most experienced and accomplished star, Hilary Knight, has played a pivotal role in securing her country’s 10th World Women’s Hockey League. Championships gold medal and the first in four years.

The 33-year-old Knight scored three times, including the go-ahead goal with 3:10 left in the downs, in a 6-3 win over Canada, at home to cross-border rivals in suburban Toronto on Sunday.

Apologizing for her voice, which was hoarse from a ceremony that featured Americans singing a rousing rendition of “The Star-Spangled Banner,” Knight smiled and said, “Yeah, it’s been a long time.”

The Americans overcame three one-goal deficits and losses of the past three gold medal encounters against Canada at the past two World Championships and the Beijing 2022 Winter Games to reclaim gold for the first time since a 2-1 shootout victory over Finland in 2019.
