China to be centre of Mercedes-Benz 2025 EV sales drive, Automobilwoche says

Automobilwoche says China will be the center of Mercedes-Benz’s 2025 EV sales engine<br />

Frankfurt, July 23 (BNA): Mercedes-Benz (MBGn.DE) is making China, the world’s largest auto market, central to its upcoming electric vehicle (EV) campaign starting in 2025, the CEO of Mercedes-Benz told German magazine Automobilwoche.

Ola Kaellenius was quoted as saying “To do this, we must master electric propulsion just like digitization. This is what our customers expect.”

From 2025, all of Mercedes-Benz’s new vehicle platforms will only make electric vehicles according to the German luxury automaker’s strategy set for 2021, Reuters reports.

A senior Automobilwoche executive said that the models the company plans to launch in China based on the upcoming MB.EA platform are being reviewed to ensure they better meet the needs of local customers, while also specifying space and digital content.

China remains the most relevant market for German automakers, but local brands command an 81% share of the Chinese electric vehicle market in 2022, according to Counterpoint Research.

China also has a significant stake in Mercedes-Benz, of which the largest shareholders are Beijing Automobile Group Co., Ltd. (1958.HK) and Geely (GEELY.UL) chairman Li Shufu.

At the same time, Berlin is trying to limit its exposure to the Chinese economy as part of an effort to mock the German economy that has intensified since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine exposed Germany’s dependence on one dominant gas supplier.
