Munich’s Lewandowski gets Golden Shoe award as European top scorer

Berlin, September 21 (BNA) Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski received today, Tuesday, the Golden Boot award as the best scorer in Europe last season.

Poland’s Lewandowski scored a Bundesliga record 41 goals in the 2020-21 season, surpassing former Bayern player Gerd Muller’s record of 40 in 1971-72.

Argentine star Lionel Messi ranked second with 30 goals, followed by Cristiano Ronaldo, who scored 29 goals with Juventus.

Muller, who recently passed away, is the only other Bayern player to win the award. “I am delighted with this great honor,” Lewandowski said.

German Football Association president Christian Seifert said the record would be “forever”, as he said Lewandowski was “one of the best players in the history of the Bundesliga who has played on a world-class level for many years”.

Bayern Munich CEO Oliver Kahn said: “Robert Lewandowski is the best player in the world for a reason. His goals say it all and their continuity is an expression of how hard he works every day.

Lewandowski replaces Lazio’s Ciro Immobile who won the award owned by European Sports Media Group in 2020.

Based on the UEFA coefficient, each goal in the top five and most competitive leagues in Europe is ranked by two points, and the other by two and a half points or one point, depending on the strength of the league.
