Moscow ends its partial lockdown despite high Covid-19 count

Moscow, November 3 (BNA): Moscow announced, on Wednesday, the lifting of its partial closure after a week and a half, despite the constantly rising rates of the spread of the Covid-19 virus.

The Interfax news agency quoted Sergei Sobyanin as saying that the situation in hospitals and other places had eased. As a result, a week-long holiday for workers, which Russian President Vladimir Putin issued for the whole country, will not be extended beyond Monday in the capital.

Moscow and other hard-hit areas have imposed additional restrictions in conjunction with the shutdown. In the capital, a city of more than 12 million people, only supermarkets and pharmacies have been allowed to open since Thursday last week, with few exceptions.

Sobyanin explained that rules before the partial closure will continue to apply, meaning residents must show evidence of vaccination or recovery from Covid-19, or a negative test, if they want to go to places like theaters and museums.

Moscow authorities counted more than 6,800 new cases of infection on Wednesday and 95 deaths. Experts believe the actual numbers are much higher.

During the same one-day period, more than 40,400 infections were recorded across Russia and 1,189 people died of the virus – the highest toll since the epidemic began.
