Montenegro gunman kills 11 on the street; police kill him

Cetinje Aug. 12 (BNA): A Montenegrin man set off in a shooting spree Friday, killing 11 people on the city’s streets before being shot dead, the Associated Press reported. .


State TV channel RTCG said the 34-year-old gunman wounded six other people, including a policeman, in the Medovina district of Cetiny, near the seat of the former royal government. The city is located 36 kilometers (22 miles) west of Podgorica, the current capital of the small Balkan country.


Citing eyewitnesses, RTCG said the attacker fired indiscriminately at people walking on the street, including children. It added that four of the injured were taken to a hospital in Cetinje, while two others with serious injuries were sent to the medical center in Podgorica.


RTCG quoted police sources as saying the attack followed a family dispute, but did not give further details. Police have yet to issue an official statement about the attack but have blocked the website.


The Prime Minister of Montenegro Dritan Abazovic wrote in his Telegram channel that there was an “unprecedented tragedy” in Cetiny, calling on the nation “to be, in their opinion, with the families of the innocent victims, their relatives, friends and all the people of Cetiny.”
