Mexico suspends league soccer matches after massive brawl

Mexico City, March 6 (BNA) The Mexican First Division Football suspended all matches scheduled for Sunday after a big quarrel between fans during Saturday’s match between host Queretaro and Atlas of league champions Guadalajara.

Saturday’s match was suspended in the 62nd minute when multiple fights broke out in the stands. Security personnel opened the stadium gates so that fans, including women and children, could escape from the stands.

Queretaro Governor Mauricio Corrie said in videos posted early Sunday morning that 14 men had been taken to hospital. Four of them sustained minor injuries, eight are in stable condition, but two of the injured are in critical condition with serious injuries.

They may have been two unconscious men on the ground being repeatedly kicked and beaten in videos posted on social media, according to the Associated Press.

After the clash broke out, the players from Atlas’ visit quickly fled to the locker rooms as some did on the Queretaro side. Other Queretaro players, including Uruguay goalkeeper Washington Aguirre, remained near the bench in an attempt to calm the fans.

After several minutes, some of the fights moved to the field where they continued punching and kicking. Some people were armed with chairs and metal bars.

Both groups issued statements condemning the violence.
