Met Opera drops vaccine requirement, still mandates masks

New York, Aug. 24 (BUS): The Metropolitan Opera has canceled vaccination requirements for fans next season, but will still require the wearing of masks.

The decision announced Tuesday differentiates between the Met and Broadway theaters, which eased restrictions in July by making mask-wearing optional.

In May, most Broadway theaters scrapped the requirement that audience members provide proof of vaccination to enter venues.

The Met season begins September 27 with the company’s premiere of Cherubini’s “Medea” with Italian subtitles, reports the Associated Press.

The company returned last season from a year-and-a-half absence due to the pandemic, running 196 theatrical productions without canceling. The Met has sold 61% of available tickets, down from 75% in the pre-pandemic 2018-2019 season.
