Melbourne Jan. 20 (BUS): Faced with a hostile crowd and a whole host of Nick Kyrgios agitations and tricks, Daniil Medvedev stayed calm long enough to reach the third round at the Australian Open.
Kyrgios, ranked 115th, rallied the crowd, hitting the Twinners and “shooting down”, mixing up the rhythm of his groundstrokes and throwing an underarm serve in an attempt to irritate the second-placed Russian.
Medvedev kept his composure as he made a quick trip to the locker room after losing the third set and bounced back to win 7-6 (1), 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 on Thursday at Rod Laver Arena, the agency reported. Associated Press. .
In the seventh game of the third set, Kyrgios had two break points when he parried Medvedev’s backhand towards his body and then smashed into a circle behind the baseline to celebrate as if he had scored.
When he shifted the break, he danced the change and worked to excite the crowd.
Medvedev reduced the volume with breaks twice in the fourth set to defeat the talented but erratic Kyrgios for the first time in three attempts.
He sent 31 aces to the Australian’s 17, converting four of 11 break chances while saving seven of nine on serve.
Medvedev was last season’s runner-up, but avenged the loss by defeating Novak Djokovic in the US Open final.
He’s near No. 1 now, however, because Djokovic was deported on the eve of the tournament for failing to meet Australia’s stringent COVID-19 vaccination regulations.
Another contender in a semi-tie went into a routine run, as fourth seed Stefanos Tsitsipas beat Sebastian Baez 7-6 (1), 6-7 (5), 6-3, 6-4.
