Medvedev win no great surprise for confident Kyrgios

Montreal, Aug. 11 (BUS): Nick Kyrgios continued his career best by defeating world number one Daniil Medvedev at the Canadian Masters – a win that surprised everyone except the Australian.

Confident after reaching the Wimbledon final and winning the tournament in Washington last week, Kyrgios reacted with dismay to questions that suggested the win should represent some kind of career advancement, Reuters reports.

“You guys are acting like I’ve never beat the world number one before or something,” he told reporters in Montreal. “I’ve done it before. I’ve beaten Medvedev before. I’ve defeated Roger (Federer), Novak (Djokovic), Rafa (Nadal).

“I didn’t go there thinking he was the world number one. We played each other three times. He beat me once, you beat me twice.

“I did really well on the big points today. I feel like I’m playing and my confidence under pressure is at an all-time high. That’s all I really did.”

Medvedev was joined by three of the other top five in a second-round exit on Wednesday, opening the draw in the US Open warm-up period.

The lack of ranking points at Wimbledon this year means Kyrgios is still 37th in the world and unranked in Montreal.

“It’s just one game in the scheme of things,” he said of winning 6-7(2), 6-4, 6-2.

“This is not going to take my ranking to the top 10. It’s only one match, so I need to prepare for the next match.”

The next match will be against fellow countryman Alex de Minaur in the round of 16 on Thursday and Kyrgios said he will continue to give everything in the tuning events rather than resting at Flushing Meadows.

“I think the best way to live my life is to go day in and day out, and try to be a little better every day,” he said.

“I can go to the US Open, feel fresh, and play someone on a very good day. Then I’ll regret not leaving everything out of the tank in Montreal, Cincinnati.”
