Medvedev, Rublev upset in Madrid; Sabalenka advances

Madrid, May 2 (BNA): Men’s top seeds Daniil Medvedev and Andrei Rublev were knocked out in the fourth round of the Madrid Open on Tuesday.

The second seed for women, Aryna Sabalenka, reached the round of four, after falling behind Mayar Sharif with a set and a break. Sabalenka defeated Al-Masry 2-6, 6-2, 6-1.

The Australian Open champion has reached her fifth semi-final in seven tournaments. Madrid won in 2021, according to the Associated Press.

Sherif, seeded 59, was the first Egyptian to reach the quarter-finals of a WTA 1000 tournament.

Second seed Medvedev lost to qualifier Aslan Karatsev 7-6(1), 6-4. And Karatsev, ranked 121st, scored his first victory over a top-10 opponent since 2021.

Rublev, seeded No. 5, lost to his doubles partner Karen Khachanov 7-6 (8), 6-4. Khachanov saved two set points in a tiebreaker for his first win over a top-10 opponent on clay since 2019.

Medvedev entered the match with a record of 33-4 this year. Karatsev is a former world No. 14 and has won three Tour titles, most recently in Sydney last year.

Khachanov improved his win-loss record to 19-0 after winning the first set in 2023. His next opponent will be defending champion Carlos Alcaraz or 13th seed Alexander Zverev, who he met late on Tuesday.
