Hector wins final World Cup giant slalom before Olympics

Rome, Jan. 25 (BNA): Sarah Hector won the Giant Slalom World Cup final before the Beijing Olympics, with 2018 gold medalist Mikaela Schiffrin placing fifth.

Hector came second after the first half but beat defending champion Petra Velhova to claim her second straight win in the GS category.

The Swedish skier let out a shriek after crossing the line 0.15 seconds before Vlhova on a clear, cold day at Mount Kronplatz in the Dolomites.

France’s Tessa Worley was third, 0.52 behind Hector, and just ahead of Federica Brignoni. Shiffrin was 0.81 slower than Hector and slipped to third in the Giant Slalom standings.

Hector leads the rankings, ahead of Worley by 95 points. The giant slalom opens the women’s skating program in China on February 7.

Shiffrin also lost his place in the overall standings. The Americans’ lead over Flova was reduced to only 17 points.

This weekend’s Women’s World Cup circuit moves to Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany – where the slopes and the Super G are due to be decided – ahead of a layover for the Olympics.
