McNulty claims first Grand Tour stage win

Rome, May 21 (BNA): American cyclist Brandon McNulty won the 15th stage of the Giro d’Italia on Sunday, taking his first victory in a Grand Tour, while Bruno Armirael retained the leader’s jersey as the race prepares for a dramatic and exciting race. The last crucial week.

McNulty, who rides with the UAE’s Emirates Team Emirates, overtook Ben Healy and Marco Frigo at the end of the grueling 195-kilometre (121-mile) route from Sereno to Bergamo, according to the Associated Press.

All three were part of a big breakaway that started early in the stage. Healy attacked on the fourth and final categorized climb and McNulty contented himself with him on the descent, followed by Frigo with 10km to go.

Frigo was dropped back on the unclassified climb shortly before the finish, but his impressive descending skills saw him catch up with the other two, with the finish line in sight, setting up the final sprint.

Geraint Thomas led a group of general classification riders across the line, nearly seven minutes behind McNulty but 33 seconds ahead of Armirail.

This cut Armirail’s advantage over Thomas to one minute and eight seconds. Primo Roglic was two seconds behind.
