Mauricio Pochettino hired as Chelsea manager to lead rebuild after turbulent season

London, May 29 (BNA): Chelsea signed Mauricio Pochettino as head coach on Monday, tasking the Argentine coach with getting the best out of an expensive, underperforming squad at the start of a new era for the English club.

Chelsea said Pochettino would take over on July 1, after agreeing to a two-year contract, with the club the chance to keep him for another year.

This is Pochettino’s first coaching role since leaving Paris Saint-Germain in July last year and marks his return to the Premier League, where he spent a 5-and-a-half-year spell with Tottenham, which included reaching the Champions League final.

Pochettino was widely expected to take over at Chelsea, which is considered one of the most prestigious positions in European football.

He is the permanent successor to Graham Potter, who was fired in March after nearly seven months in office.

Former Chelsea midfielder Frank Lampard has captained the team on a caretaker basis since then and achieved a Premier League bottom-half finish of 12th for the first time since the 1995-96 season.
