London, November 4 (BUS) – A man who broadcast himself live on Facebook while racially abusing England players Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho and Bukayo Saka after the Euro 2020 final has been jailed for 10 weeks.
Jonathan Best, a forklift driver, 52, used the site to talk about the English trio, all black, after they missed penalties in the final against Italy on July 11, Reuters reports.
The British Public Prosecution Service said, on Wednesday, that Best had been sentenced in the Willesden Court of First Instance in London, after he pleaded guilty to sending a message or matter that was offensive, indecent, obscene or threatening, via a public communications network.
One of Best’s Facebook friends reported the video to the police and Facebook after refusing to take it down.
“While the majority of the nation felt immensely proud that the Three Lions reached their first international final in more than 50 years, Jonathan Best took to Facebook to air a barrage of racist abuse of the three players who missed penalty shootouts during the match,” Eileen Cousins from the DPP told Cousins.
“There is absolutely no room in the game, nor anywhere else, for racism,” Cousins added.
