Paris, October 19 (BUS): For years, they both ignored and admired each other. Now that the dust has begun to settle on their animosity, the Louvre is, for the first time, shedding light on the relationship between Pablo Picasso and the world-famous museum.
The lesser-known history of the interaction between two greats of the art world is the focus of this show, said curator Dimitri Salmon, as he announced the show at the Louvre branch in Lens in northern France until January 31. 2022, according to the German news agency (dpa).
Salmon explained that the Louvre, and its specialists in ancient painting, were highly critical of Picasso’s modernity.
With 450 works ranging from paintings to ceramics to photographs, the museum explores the heated relationship between one of the 20th century’s most important artists and one of the world’s greatest.
The early decades in particular were tumultuous, beginning with suspicions of Picasso (1881-1973)’s involvement in the theft of two Iberian statues.
Picasso’s friend, Guillaume Apollinaire, turned out to be the thief of the two stone statues on display as well.
In 1937, a proposal to purchase Still Life with a Jug and Bread provoked stormy exchanges. One member of the art committee even went so far as to say that he wouldn’t even hang the painter’s pictures in his toilet.
Picasso, who settled in Paris in 1904, first visited the Louvre in 1900. He discovered a collection of Egyptian, Greek, Roman and Asian antiquities, as well as paintings by Nicolas Poussin and Jean-Auguste Dominique. Ingres.
Their influence on Picasso is illustrated by their proximity to his works in the exhibition.
Then in 1971, the Louvre paid a unique tribute to the Spanish artist. Picasso has been shown alongside the works of the Old Masters in the Grand Gallery.
During his visit to the exhibition, then-President Georges Pompidou publicly stated for the first time that the Picasso Museum would be established.
The Musée Picasso, one of the most famous museums in Paris and the largest Picasso Museum in the world, recently announced that it is expanding its already huge catalog of Picasso paintings with eight more works.
