Late Matip header earns Liverpool victory over Ajax

Liverpool, September 13 (BNA): Joel Matip scored the winning goal in the 89th minute as Liverpool beat Ajax Amsterdam 2-1 in the Champions League Group A match at Anfield on Tuesday.

Mohamed Salah put the hosts ahead in the 17th minute after he was picked up by Diogo Jota, the Egyptian who beat Ajax goalkeeper Remko Psphere to finish off the mark, Reuters reported.

But the lead lasted only 10 minutes before Ajax equalized with a stunning shot from Mohamed Kodos, who worked himself into some space in the penalty area before hitting the ball into the top corner.

Liverpool enjoyed the most pressure after the break but Ajax defender Daley Blind missed a huge opportunity to put the Dutch side ahead when he was left unmarked at the back post but with a long header.

Substitute Darwin Nunez was supposed to win the Liverpool match in the 83rd minute after Salah slipped him, but the Uruguayan striker fired a long shot from a great position inside the penalty area.

Salah’s attempt deflected and then hit the post before, from a corner kick to Costas Tsimikas, Matip headed in the victory.

Liverpool lost their opening match in the group 4-1 to Napoli.
