Madrid, May 3 (BNA): Veronica Kudrmitova reached the semi-finals of the WTA 1000 tournament for the first time after defeating third seed Jessica Pegula 6-4, 0-6, 6-4 at the Madrid Open on Wednesday.

12th seed Kudermitova sealed a header victory on her second match point to set up a semi-final match against No. 1 Iga Swatic or Petra Martic, who will play later on Wednesday.

Pegula was trying to reach her second consecutive final in Madrid. She was the runner-up to Anas Jaber in the clay court championship last year. It was Kudmitova’s fourth straight three-set win, reports the Associated Press.

Kudermetova has reached the quarterfinals three times at the WTA 1000 level or higher, all in 2022, including at Roland Garros for her best Grand Slam tour.

The 26-year-old has reached another semi-final this year in Adelaide and Doha. The tournament in Madrid went on a four-match losing streak.

Pegula struggled while serving and showed frustration at times, including hitting her racket on the floor.

She was broken three times in both the first and third sets, though she needed just 22 minutes to get through the second as Kudermetova won by just five points.
