Korean drama wins international Emmy

Seoul, Nov. 22 (BNA): South Korean historical romance drama “A King’s Affection” has become the country’s first TV drama to win an International Emmy Award, the drama broadcaster reported.

KBS said the series was chosen as the winner of the International Emmy Award for Best Telenovela during the 50th Annual Awards ceremony held in New York City on Monday. According to Yonhap Agency, the Korean show beat the candidates from China, Spain and Brazil to receive this honor.

The 20-part series starring Park Eun-bin and Rowoon is about a fictional princess of the Joseon Dynasty (1392-1910) who grew up as her deceased twin brother and became a monarch.

“It became the first Korean drama to win an International Emmy Award,” said Lee Geun Joon, head of the KBS Drama Center. “We will do our best so that KBS dramas can play a big role in keeping Korean content strong.”

The International Emmy Awards are one of the world’s top three awards for television programming, along with Canada’s Banff World Media Festival and Monaco’s Monte Carlo Television Festival.

Awarded by the New York-based International Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, the International Emmys recognize the best television programming initially produced and broadcast outside the United States.
