Riyadh, January 6 (BNA): The names of the winners of the famous King Faisal Prize for the year 2022 were announced at a ceremony held in the Saudi capital, Riyadh.
The ceremony was attended by Prince Khaled Al-Faisal, Advisor to the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, Governor of Makkah Al-Mukarramah Region and Chairman of the Board of Directors of the King Faisal Prize.
The Secretary General of the KFP, Dr. Abdulaziz Al-Sabeel, said that the former Tanzanian President Ali Hassan Mwinyi and the Egyptian academic Professor Hassan Mahmoud Al-Shafei, have won the 2022 King Faisal Prize for distinguished services to Islam.
The Arabic Language and Literature Prize was awarded jointly with Professor Susan Stekevich, who specializes in classical Arabic poetry at Georgetown University, and Professor Mohsen Al-Moussawi, literary critic, scholar and professor of Arabic literature and cultural studies at Columbia University.
Professor David Ruchian Liu, Professor of Chemistry and Chemical Biology at Harvard and MIT, was honored in the Medicine category.
The Science Prize was awarded jointly by Professor Martin Herer, an Austrian-British mathematician and professor of mathematics at Imperial College London, and Professor Nader Masmoudi, a Tunisian mathematician at New York University’s Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences.
The Islamic Studies Award was withheld because the entries did not meet the criteria set by the committees.
Al-Sabeel said in September that the award committees choose each year a specific topic for each award.
The awards selection committees comprise highly qualified professionals, scholars and public figures from 26 different countries.
“Epidemiology and Vaccine Development” is the subject of the Medicine Award and the “Islamic Heritage of Andalusia” for the Islamic Studies Award.
The subject of the Arabic Language and Literature Prize is “Classical Arabic Narrative and Modern Theories”, and the Science Prize is awarded in the field of “Chemistry”.
Service to Islam is an appreciation award granted to those who have had a prominent role in serving Islam and Muslims intellectually, scientifically and socially through various works, activities, programs and projects that have had a positive impact on the Muslim community. .
Launched by the King Faisal Foundation, the King Faisal Prize was established in 1979. 275 scientists from 43 countries have been honored over the course of its existence for their distinguished merit, and 21 of them have won the Nobel Prize.
