Kazakhstan votes in parliamentary election

Almaty, March 19 (BNA): Kazakhstan is voting in snap parliamentary elections in which many personalities are running as independents for the first time in nearly two decades.

A stronger mandate would help President Kasym-Jomart Tokayev navigate the regional turmoil caused by the Russo-Ukraine war and its subsequent damage to trade, investment and supply chains across the former Soviet Union.

Tokayev, 69, officially became president three years ago, and in January 2022 he shuffled the cabinet.

Elections for the lower house of parliament were not scheduled until 2026, and the president called for a snap vote.
