Tokyo, March 11 (BNA) Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida and South Korean President-elect Yoon Seok-yeol spoke over the phone today, Friday, and agreed to cooperate in order to improve relations between the two countries.
After their 15-minute talk, Kishida told reporters that “healthy relations” between Japan and its important neighbor, South Korea, “are indispensable to achieving the rules-based international order and ensuring peace, stability and prosperity in the region and the world.”
Yoon, a conservative former attorney general and a foreign policy novice, was elected president of South Korea to replace outgoing Moon Jae-in.
Japanese officials – including lawmakers from the ruling conservative Kishida Party – and experts have welcomed the victory of Yun, who has sought a stronger alliance with the United States and improved relations with Japan.
