Italian former Foreign Minister Frattini dies at 65


Rome, Dec. 25 (BNA): Franco Frattini, who held the position of Italian Foreign Minister twice and held several other ministerial positions, died today, Saturday, at the age of 65, according to Italian media.

Frattini, who had been ill with cancer for some time, died in a hospital in Rome.

He was foreign minister in the governments of Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi from 2002-2004 and 2008-2011 and held two other ministerial posts in the governments of Berlusconi and Lamberto Dini in the 1990s, Reuters reported.

From 2004 to 2008 he was European Commissioner for Justice, and at the time of his death he was President of the Italian Council of State, an advisory body that oversees public administration.

He started his political activity as a member of the Socialist Party and later joined Berlusconi’s centre-right parties.
