Manama, August 1 (BNA): The Directorate of Oversight, Detention and Corrections at the Ombudsman’s Office today carried out an inspection visit to the Jaw Correctional and Rehabilitation Center to see the coordination procedures and arrangements taken by the center. To enable inmates to perform religious rites related to Ashura, as guaranteed by the law and its executive regulations.
The Ombudsman team collected information by asking samples from inmates on the subject in question, interviewing relevant officials from the management of the center and reviewing CCTV recordings installed in the premises.
The concerned inmates told the Ombudsman’s team that they are allowed to collectively practice Ashura rituals for this year on a daily basis, and that their gatherings are organized by the inmates themselves under the supervision of the center’s management in large halls allocated by the administration. for this purpose.
The inmates were revealed to put up written signs and slogans, and they were allowed to read the books of supplication for these rituals and make the necessary preparations without compromising the security of the center and the safety of other inmates.
While reviewing the CCTV recordings on the premises of the center, the Ombudsman team found that the inmates were allowed to practice religious rituals in a normal and regular manner and that they were able to participate in them in accordance with the regulations in force in the place.
The center’s management stated that there are continuous facilities to enable inmates to practice their religious rites with ease in all buildings, and they are allowed to gather in large halls at specific times as stipulated in Law No. (18) of 2014 regarding the issuance of the Reform and Rehabilitation Institutions Law.
The Ombudsman’s team concluded that the administration of the Correction and Rehabilitation Center in Jaw deals with the issue of freedom of religious rites for inmates in accordance with the provisions of the Reform and Rehabilitation Institutions Law to enable inmates to perform these rituals in a balanced manner, by ensuring the security of the facility on the one hand, and the safety and comfort of other inmates on the other. .
