Hollywood sign gets makeover ahead of its centennial in 2023

Washington, Oct. 4 (US): The Hollywood sign is undergoing a makeover befitting its status as an icon in Tinseltown, according to the Associated Press.

After pressure washing and removing some of the rust, this week workers began using 250 gallons (946 liters) of primer and white to decorate the sign ahead of its centenary next year.

The entire renovation effort is expected to take up to eight weeks. The sign was originally built in 1923, and read “Hollywoodland” to promote real estate development.

But after decades of neglect, the original label was shortened to “Hollywood” and then completely replaced by a new label in 1978.

The 45-foot (13 m) banner in the Hollywood Hills above Los Angeles is repainted every decade.
