Hollywood largely silent on Golden Globe nominations amid controversy

LOS ANGELES, DECEMBER 14 (US): Movie dramas “The Power of the Dog” and “Belfast” on Monday topped the nominations for the annual Golden Globe Awards in a year marred by controversy and mini-celebration.

“Belfast,” set in the 1970s from Northern Ireland, and director Jane Campion’s “The Power of the Dog” earned seven nods each. They were followed by “Don’t Look For”, a satire of global warming. “King Richard” about the father of tennis champions Venus and Serena Williams; Director Steven Spielberg’s remake of the classic musical “West Side Story” and the upcoming “Licorice Pizza” with four each.

Netflix Movies received 17 Leading nominations.

The winners of the Golden Globes will be announced on January 9, but the format of the ceremony is unclear after NBC earlier this year dropped plans to broadcast the glitzy awards dinner in Beverly Hills after criticism from the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA), the group Which you vote on, according to Reuters.

Monday’s nominations were met with mostly silence from movie studios and actors who usually flood social media and reporters with thanks and reactions.

Lady Gaga (“House of Gucci”), Nicole Kidman (“Being the Ricardos”), Will Smith (“King Richard”), Kristen Stewart (“Spencer”) and Denzel Washington (“The Tragedy of Macbeth”) were among Actors nominated for Best Performance in a Motion Picture Drama.

In television, the drama “Succession,” about a feuding family media conglomerate, received five Leading nominations. Actor Brian Cox, who was nominated for his role as Patriarch Logan Roy, told The Hollywood Reporter that he thinks the Hollywood Foreign Journalists Association has changed for the better in the past 20 years and added “a lot of great female journalists.”

He said, “If you are honoured, you should respond by saying ‘Thank you’.”

The Hollywood Association of Foreign Journalists said it had made choices this year by watching movies in theaters, in theaters and via live broadcasts, in what it called a “fair and equitable voting process”.
