History Manama Municipality to be revamped; bid to enter Unesco heritage list

Manama, February 27 (BNA) The historic building of the Manama municipality will be renovated as part of an effort to be included in the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites.

The Bahrain Authority for Culture and Antiquities (BACA) and the Ministry of Works, Municipalities Affairs and Urban Planning will participate in the renovation of the iconic building.

This campaign is part of the ongoing cooperation to develop Bahrain’s cultural infrastructure across the country and to enhance the historical cities, especially Manama and Muharraq.

The authority will work to develop the restoration work of the building in accordance with the original urban features and assign a specialized engineering team and designers in coordination with the Ministry.

Sheikha Mai bint Mohammed Al Khalifa, President of the British Airports Authority, stressed the importance of the project as Bahrain prepares to celebrate 100 years of municipal work.

The Minister of Works, Municipalities Affairs and Urban Planning Issam bin Abdullah Khalaf affirmed the fruitful joint cooperation to enhance the urban features of cities in the Kingdom of Bahrain.

Built in 1919, the historic building is recorded in history as the first municipality in the Arabian Gulf and the third in the Arab region.

The late Sheikh Abdullah bin Isa Al Khalifa was the first to head the municipality that had an eight-member council appointed by the government, before it was expanded to include 24 members, some of whom were elected for the first time in the region.
