Higher Education Council, British Council launch training programme for university students

Manama, October 24 (BNA) Under the patronage of the Secretary-General of the Higher Education Council and Vice-Chairman of its Board of Trustees, Dr. Sheikha Rana bint Isa bin Daij Al Khalifa, the training program for the Higher Education Center was implemented. The “Climate Champions” international research project for university students in public and private higher education institutions in the Kingdom, in partnership with the British Council, was inaugurated today.

The program, which was attended by the British Ambassador to Bahrain Rudy Drummond and heads of higher education institutions in the Kingdom, aims to enhance the research capabilities of students in a way that contributes to addressing environmental and climate challenges and problems in the Kingdom.

Environmental, climate and research skills experts, Dan Boyden and Daniel Smith, will deliver a lecture during the program, which runs from October 23-28 at the Wyndham Grand Hotel in Bahrain Bay.

In her speech at the opening session, Dr. Sheikha Rana thanked the British Embassy and the British Council for their partnership in implementing this training program, which is related to an important topic closely related to various development fields, and which also coincides with patriotism. She also praised the participation of ten academics and 50 university students from various disciplines in the Kingdom’s higher education institutions.

The Secretary-General of the Supreme Elections Committee added that the program will continue throughout the first semester of this academic year, as participants in the workshops will be divided into groups, and each group will be tasked with preparing a research and social project on one of the environmental and social fields. Each group will be supervised by a faculty member involved in the program, and will liaise with trainers in the UK virtually.

The UK ambassador expressed his pride in working with the Higher Education Council, and stressed the importance of continuing the partnership with the British Council, which is concerned with training and empowering students at various educational levels, and in several areas, including scientific research and innovation. that serve the Kingdom’s research priorities. He cited the Environmental Leaders Project, which is funded by the British Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) and this year runs from 10 September 2021 to 31 March 2022.

Ambassador Drummond also highlighted the importance of meeting the global challenge of climate change, noting that the upcoming United Nations Climate Change Conference 2021 in Glasgow will attract more than 125 world leaders, adding that young Bahraini climate leaders will be supported to come up with ideas and projects. The Director of the British Council – Bahrain, Richard Rose, indicated that the program is part of the continuous cooperation programs with the Higher Education Council, noting that during the previous academic year a number of training workshops in the field of scientific research were provided for undergraduate students. The Director of Scientific Research at the Higher Education Council, Dr. Farzana Al-Maraghi, indicated that this program comes within the initiatives of the Bahrain National Research Strategy, as it aims to raise public awareness and spread a culture of scientific research and innovation.
