HH Shaikha Mariam bint Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa visits restored minaret

Manama, June 8 (BNA) Her Highness Sheikha Mariam bint Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa today visited the restored minaret of the Al-Fadhel Mosque, which has restored its original identity.

The President of the Bahrain Authority for Culture and Antiquities, Sheikha Mai bint Mohammed Al Khalifa, expressed her sincere thanks to Her Highness Sheikha Mariam bint Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa for her support,

She said that the iconic minaret reflects the long history of the city of Manama, whose name has been associated with this important landmark in the lives of its people and those coming to it since the forties.

She stressed the importance of investing in culture, which embodies the interest of everyone who believes in the crucial role of culture and archeology as an identity for societies and nations.

The Bahrain Authority for Culture and Antiquities (BACA) launched a project to restore the original identity of the minaret of Al-Fadhel Mosque in 2018, with the support of Her Highness Sheikha Mariam bint Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa and the Bank of Bahrain and Kuwait.

The project was taken over by a team of 35 people from the Italian Center for the Conservation of Antiquities (CCA) and BACA, led by the Italian international engineer Roberto Nardi from the center and engineer Mario Avaki from the authority, working continuously for 2,200 days.

In order to restore its original visual identity, more than 1.2 million pieces of mosaic, stained glass and Buccino marble were used, and an 18-story scaffold was installed.

The team installed a new indoor and outdoor lighting system to give the minaret a new and distinctive luster at different times of the day, as well as a dicing protection system, as well as modern loudspeakers for the ears.

The team also used flexible materials that are resistant to climate changes during the year and suitable for the climate of the Kingdom of Bahrain.

The famous 39-meter-high minaret was built in 1938 as part of the Al-Fadil Mosque, which was built by members of the Al-Fadil family.
