Heavy snowfall forecast to hit South Korea’s capital, central areas

Seoul, Dec. 15 (BNA): The South Korean Meteorological Agency expected heavy snow to hit the capital of South Korea and its central areas today, Thursday, with more than 10 centimeters of snow expected in some parts of Gyeonggi, Gangwon and North Chungcheong provinces.


The Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) said that starting in the morning, snow is likely to fall in the greater Seoul area and parts of the provinces of Gangwon, North Chungcheong and South Chungcheong between 3 cm and 8 cm.


Yonhap said the eastern parts of Gyeonggi, the central and southern interiors of Gangwon, and the northern parts of North Chungcheong could see more than 10 centimeters of snow.


Snowfall of between 1 cm and 5 cm was also forecast in other parts of North and South Chungcheong, parts of North and South Gyeongsang provinces, and parts of North and South Jeolla provinces.


Snow will begin to stop in the greater Seoul area in the afternoon, and by nightfall, most parts of the country are expected to emerge from snowy weather, according to KMA.


Freezing temperatures may accompany forecasts of heavy snowfall, as the temperature in Seoul reached minus 7.7 degrees Celsius at 5 a.m.


Temperatures in most parts of the country, with the exception of Jeju Island, reached between -9.5°C and minus 3.4°C.
