Health Minister meets WHO Director-General

Geneva, May 30 (BNA): Minister of Health, Dr. Jalila bint Al-Sayed Jawad Hassan, met with Director-General of the World Health Organization, Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, on the sidelines of the 76th session of the committee. World Health Assembly (WHA), currently in session here.

The minister praised the role of the World Health Organization in achieving comprehensive health, as reflected in the theme of the 76th session of the World Health Assembly (“WHO in 75: Saving Lives, Leading Health for All”), stressing the interest of the Bahraini Ministry of Health to continue implementing its joint programmes. She praised the World Health Organization’s support for regional and global health issues, citing its recent declaration that COVID-19 is no longer a global health emergency, which reflects the organization’s advanced performance and success in overcoming many challenges towards achieving the goals of sustainable development.

The two sides reviewed many issues of common interest, and discussed areas of cooperation and coordination between the Kingdom of Bahrain and the World Health Organization, stressing the importance of reconciling proactive plans and future programs related to confronting epidemics and infectious diseases, as well as ways to address them with a strong structure. and sustainable health systems.

The Director-General of the World Health Organization expressed his deep thanks and appreciation to the Kingdom for its efforts in developing the health sector and the decades-long cooperation with the World Health Organization, praising the effective role played by the WHO country office in Bahrain since its inauguration.

Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus praised the Minister of Health’s chairmanship of the main committee of the World Health Assembly (a) during the 76th session of the World Health Assembly, noting that it is the first time that Bahrain has assumed such a high position that requires dealing with major technical issues, such as health.
