Google to prevent climate change deniers from making money from ads

New York, Oct. 8 (BUS): Internet giant Google announced Thursday that it will ban climate change deniers from being able to monetize its content on its platforms.

The company said in a statement that a new policy for advertisers, publishers and content creators on YouTube will ban ads for content that “contradicts the established scientific consensus about the existence and causes” of climate change, and the monetization of it.

“This includes content referring to climate change as a hoax or fraud, claims denying that long-term trends show the global climate is warming, and claims denying that greenhouse gas emissions or human activity contribute to climate change,” Google said.

Advertisers simply don’t want their ads to appear next to this content. Publishers and creators don’t want ads promoting these claims to appear on their pages or videos.

Google will consider the context in which the claims are made, and make a distinction between content that states the false claim as fact, versus content that reports or discusses that claim.

“We will also continue to allow advertising and monetization from other climate-related topics, including public discussions on climate policy, the disparate impacts of climate change, new research, and more.”

German news agency dpa reported that Google will start implementing the policy from November.
