Germany’s health minister tests positive for COVID-19

Berlin, August 5 (BNA): The German Minister of Health, an epidemiologist by training who has led the country’s fight against Covid-19 since December, has tested positive for the Corona virus.

Health Ministry Karl Lauterbach said early Friday morning that the 59-year-old had only mild symptoms and was working from home.

She said Lauterbach had undergone four vaccinations and that his infection “shows that with a highly contagious omicron variant, infection cannot be completely ruled out even with the utmost caution.”

Germany, like many other countries, has seen large — although recently declining — numbers of cases this summer as new sub-variants of oomicron motor infection, according to the Associated Press.

The government said on Wednesday that some basic restrictions will remain in place through the coming fall and winter, when experts expect COVID-19 cases to rise again as people spend more time indoors.
