Gauff beats former world No. 1 Naomi Osaka in straight sets

Washington, Aug. 5 (BNA) – Coco Gauff defeated four-time major champion Naomi Osaka 6-4, 6-4 Thursday night to advance to the quarter-finals of the Silicon Valley Classic swap.

Gauff, seeded No. 6, carried all her serve in the opening set and finished the 45-minute session with three aces. Osaka suffered the first double foul of the match early in the second set and Gauff took a 2-1 lead.

Gauff built a quick 5-1 double-break lead and a 40-0 lead before Osaka saved four match points and used her first captor to win 5-2, according to the Associated Press.

She then broke Osaka Gough for the first time in the match and overcame another 40-0 deficit with five straight points to 5-4. But Gave finished the match on her eighth point of the match with an irreversible serve.

Gauff’s win tied the series with Osaka, with two wins each. Gauff will face second seed Paula Padusa on Friday.

The other winners in San Jose are Shelby Rogers and No. 4 seed Arina Sabalenka.

Rogers beat top seed Maria Scarari 6-1, 6-3 to reach the quarter-finals for the third time this season.

After winning the opening round against 2019 US Open champion Bianca Andreescu, she beat Sakkari, the 2018 finalist and 2019 runner-up in San Jose, for the third consecutive time.

Sabalenka came back from 5-3 down in the third set to beat Caroline Dolehide 5-7, 6-1, 7-5. Sabalenka overcame 20 double faults in the match to advance to play seventh seed Daria Kasatkina of Russia.
