Germany striker Werner returns to Leipzig from Chelsea

London, August 10 (BNA) The two clubs announced that Chelsea German striker Timo Werner has signed a four-year contract to return to Leipzig in the Bundesliga.

British media said RB Leipzig will return Werner for about 25 million pounds ($30.21 million) after Chelsea paid the Germany striker’s release clause of 45 million pounds in 2020, Reuters reported.

The 26-year-old spent the greater part of his football career at RB Leipzig between 2016-20 and is the club’s all-time leading scorer with 95 goals.

“The signing of Timo Werner is a special transfer for us,” said Florian Schulz, Leipzig’s commercial director of sport.

“We have seen that Timo has become the club’s record goalscorer and international player in Germany. His return means a lot to the fans because Timo has been a fan favorite and a special personality for so many people.”

Werner made his debut for Germany in the Confederations Cup win over Australia in June 2017 and now has 50 caps.

great time

“I am very happy to be able to play again with RB Leipzig,” Werner told the club’s website.

“I had a great time here… when we put in a great performance as new players in the league.

“I am looking forward to the new season with RB Leipzig and above all to meeting the Leipzig fans again, which means a lot to me. We want to achieve a lot and, of course, I want to become the first Leipzig player to reach the 100 goal mark.”

Werner parted ways with Chelsea after two years in the Premier League, lifting the Champions League trophy as well as the European Super Cup and Club World Cup in 2021.

He played 89 games with Chelsea and scored 23 goals.

“Dear Blues, today marks the end of my journey with Chelsea FC,” Werner said, posting a farewell message to fans on his social media platforms.

“I have felt so much love and support over the past two years and I will never forget how you have stood behind me in the good times and in the hard times.

“We’ve lifted trophies like the Champions League together and I will always remember the song you wrote and sang for me. I’m already looking forward to playing at Stamford Bridge again one day.”
