Germany rout Liechtenstein 9-0, Flick gets record after Loew farewell

Berlin, November 12 (BNA): Germany defeated 10-man Liechtenstein 9-0 in the World Cup qualifiers today, Thursday, as Hansi Flick set a record in coaching the hosts.

Ilkay Guendogan opened the scoring in the 11th minute with a penalty kick after Jens Hofer was sent off for hitting Leon Goretzka in the face with his shoe, according to the dpa.

Three more goals in the space of three minutes between the 20th and 23rd minutes – an own by Daniel Kaufmann, Leroy Sane and Marco Reus – made it 4-0.

Sane completed a double, Thomas Muller also twice, Riddell Baku was on target, and the second goal in his own net, from Maximilian Goebel’s header, finished the lopsided match in front of 25984 happy fans in Wolfsburg.

They had chanted former coach Joachim Loew’s name before kick-off as the 2014 World Cup winner received an emotional official farewell after 15 years in leadership that ended in the European Championship in the summer.

Loew then watched his successor, former assistant Hansi Flick, overtake him as the first German coach to win his first six matches as referee.

Germany won next year’s World Cup qualifiers last month, and concluded their campaign on Sunday in Armenia.

Liechtenstein had allowed just two goals against the Germans two months earlier with a 2-0 score in Flick’s debut, but the visitors faced a nightmare initially with a red card, a penalty kick and an own goal.
