Foreign Minister chairs National Human Rights Committee meeting

Manama, April 11 (BNA): Foreign Minister Dr. Abdullatif bin Rashid Al-Zayani chaired the meeting of the National Human Rights Committee.

He praised the efforts made by the members of the committee to enhance its work and perform the tasks entrusted to it in line with the comprehensive development process led by His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa and the follow-up of the government headed by His Highness. His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Crown Prince and Prime Minister, to protect human rights and fundamental freedoms.

The minister expressed his pride in what Bahrain has achieved in the field of human rights, and stressed the need for continued coordination among the members of the committee to consolidate Bahrain’s position in the field of protecting and promoting human rights at the regional and international levels. In this regard, he confirmed that the report of the National Institution for Human Rights (NIHR) of Bahrain on the fourth session was approved last March by the Universal Periodic Review (UPR).

During the meeting, the committee followed up on the human rights agreements reached, and discussed the developments of the working group that is preparing Bahrain’s second periodic report submitted to the Arab Charter for Human Rights Committee, and the human rights strategy.

The committee was briefed by Bahrain’s ambassador to the United States, Sheikh Abdullah bin Rashid Al Khalifa, on the work done by the embassy to highlight Bahrain’s efforts and achievements in the field of human rights protection.
