Ford to suspend or cut output at 8 of its factories due to chip shortage

San Francisco, Feb. 5 (BNA) Ford Motor Co. plans to suspend or reduce production at eight of its plants in the United States, Mexico and Canada for the next week due to chip supply restrictions, a spokeswoman told Reuters on Friday.

The changes come a day after the Detroit automaker warned that a lack of chips could lead to lower vehicle volumes in the current quarter, Reuters reported.

Production will be suspended at plants in Michigan, Chicago and Cuautitlan, Mexico. In Kansas City, production of its F-150 pickup trucks will be discontinued while one production shift of Transit trucks will be operating.

The Detroit automaker will also run one shift or a reduced schedule at its plants in Dearborn, Kentucky and Louisville, while removing overtime at its Oakville plant in Canada.

All changes will be effective for the week of February 7.

Ford shares fell on Friday, after the automaker reported lower-than-expected quarterly income and forecast a slower recovery in auto production for 2022 than rival General Motors.

However, the company said it expects vehicle volumes to improve significantly in the second half.
