Floods in Philippines kill 32

Manila, Dec. 29 (BNA): The death toll from torrential rains and shear-line floods in the Philippines has risen to 32, according to released government data.

Bernama reported that the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council counted 23 deaths in the southern Philippines, six in the Bicol region on the main island of Luzon, and three in the central Philippines.

The agency said 24 people were still missing, and 11 others were injured.

She said that the shear line will continue to drain rain in some parts of the country, especially in the central and southern Philippines, despite the dissipation of the low pressure area. The office warned of the possibility of floods and landslides caused by the rain.

The floods affected more than 486,000 people in 10 districts across the country and damaged homes, crops, roads and bridges. Some of the displaced are still staying in temporary government shelters.

The Philippines is one of the most disaster-prone countries globally, mainly due to its location in the Pacific Ring of Fire and Pacific Typhoon Belt. On average, the country experiences 20 typhoons annually, some of which are severe and destructive.
