Fighter jets chase small plane in Washington area before it crashes in Virginia

Washington, June 5 (BNA): The United States launched F-16 fighter jets in a supersonic pursuit of a light aircraft with an unresponsive pilot that violated the airspace around Washington, D.C. and later crashed into the Virginia mountains.

Virginia State Police said no survivors were found at the crash site.

Fighter jets created a sonic boom over the US capital as they pursued a stray Cessna Citation, causing panic among people in the Washington area, officials said.

A source familiar with the matter said that four people were on board the Cessna. The Cessna Citation can carry seven to 12 passengers.

Virginia State Police said in a statement that several hours after responders arrived at the crash site, they had not found anyone alive.

The Cessna is registered with Encore Motors in Melbourne, Florida, according to flight-tracking website Flight Aware.
