Federer says his comeback will not be before late summer

Bern, March 5 (BUS) – Roger Federer said on Saturday that any return to the championship after knee surgery last year will not last until at least late summer.

The 40-year-old tennis player gave an update on his lengthy rehabilitation to Swiss broadcaster SRF when he attended the Women’s Ski World Cup race in Lenzerheide, where he has a home.

Federer’s comments in November confirmed he would not be back in time for Wimbledon in June, although on Saturday he did not outline his plans for the US Open, which begins on August 29.

Federer told Real Madrid that his rehabilitation is progressing so well that he is now thinking about playing again. Previously, he said the motivation for having the surgery last August was to protect his future quality of life with his family rather than to return to competitive tennis.

Federer’s 20 grand slam titles are tied with Novak Djokovic and one short of Rafael Nadal, who won his 21st title in January at the Australian Open.
