Failed Sudan coup attempt contained, situation under control

Khartoum, September 21 (BNA): The Sudanese authorities contained a failed coup attempt and the situation was brought under control, a member of the country’s ruling council said today, Tuesday.

Spokesman Muhammad al-Faqi Suleiman said that the interrogation of suspects involved in Monday’s coup attempt was scheduled to begin and that the army would issue a statement soon.

A government source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the coup attempt included an attempt to take control of state radio in Omdurman, across the Nile from the capital, Khartoum.

The source said that measures were taken to contain a limited number of those involved.

A witness said the army used tanks to block a bridge linking Khartoum to Omdurman early Tuesday morning.

Sudan is governed under a power-sharing agreement between the military and civilians after the overthrow of former President Omar al-Bashir in April 2019.

The transitional authorities said that they had thwarted or monitored previous coup attempts linked to factions loyal to al-Bashir.
