Euro flops France, Belgium seek redemption in Nations League

Milan, October 6 (BNA) Two of the biggest disappointments in the European Championship will face each other Thursday in the semi-finals of the Nations League in Turin, according to the Associated Press.

Kylian Mbappe and the France team are looking for redemption in the Nations League, just like opponents Belgium.

Mbappe was somewhat of a scapegoat for France’s failure at Euro 2020 after missing the crucial penalty in the penalty shootout in France’s last-16 loss to Switzerland.

The 22-year-old striker was criticized by fans and even his teammates, with Olivier Giroud saying some individuals did not pass him in France’s opening match against Germany.

In a far-reaching interview this week, Mbappe said he felt like a problem for the French national team and that he would have loved more support from his teammates.

However, France coach Didier Deschamps did not want to address Mbappe’s concerns with the media.

World champion France was one of the favorites to win Euro 2020 and her loss to Switzerland came as a huge shock – not least because France were leading 3-1 with 15 minutes left.

Despite having a team full of talent, France failed to ignite the championship and won only one match, their opening match against Germany.

Top-ranked Belgium is also looking to make amends for its disappointing Euro 2020 campaign. Italy beat Belgium 2-1 in the quarter-finals on the Azzurri Road to become European champions. Belgium could face Italy again as Roberto Mancini’s side will play Spain in the other semi-final in Milan.

The final is also held in Milan on Sunday, while the match for third place will be held on the same day in Turin.

Belgium will also take revenge on their minds because the last time they met France was in the semi-finals of the 2018 World Cup, when Roberto Martinez’s side lost 1-0.
